Düsseldorf is a city of progressive architecture. The active business life, fashion and arts are maybe the main reason for the vibrant and fun nightlife of Düsseldorf which fully competes with other major cities. The old town, Atlstadt, is the main venue for the nightlife although it has a new rival which is Medienhafen, by the newly developed harbour in Düsseldorf. During the day you can see the cutting-edge architecture of architects like Frank Gehry and by night the brisk nightlife takes over.
For people interested in culture, Düsseldorf is a perfect destination. The great poet Heinrich Heine is celebrated in the city and you can even visit the house where he was born. Palaces and museums are an important part of Düsseldorf, among them the Goethe Museum, Heinrich Heine Institut, K20, K21, Museum Kunst Palats and last but not least Mahn-und Gedenkstätte für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus which shows the history of local persecution and resistance during the Third Reich.
Before a delicious dinner at any of the many great restaurants it's a good idea to take a stroll in the Hofgarten park and look at the statues, among them Heinrich Heine, Robert Schumann, and other keyfigures of German history.
