Icelandair launches stopover buddy

2016

A new, global marketing initiative is launched in early 2016. The Icelandair Stopover Buddy service allows passengers who stopover in Iceland on their way across the Atlantic to ask for a travel buddy, who is also an Icelandair employee. The initiative is called "The best marketing gimmick of 2016" by The Daily Mail.

Three new destinations are added to the route network, giving passengers, even more options. Chicago, USA, Montreal. Canada, and Aberdeen, Scotland. Icelandair resumes service to Paris Orly International Airport in addition to flying to Charles de Gaulle.

With more destinations and more trips, Icelandair adds a Boeing 767 wide-body jet to its fleet.

In the summer, Icelandair flies Iceland's male national football team to their first-ever major tournament, when they participate in the European Championships in France finishing in the top 8.

Icelandair introduces a cashless cabin, allowing passengers to pay with all major cards, both debit and credit, on board. This revolutionises service on board.

"Icelandair becomes the first European airline to offer fleet-wide gate-to-gate Wi-Fi."
