Introducing Icelandair's Facebook Messenger Bot

Icelandair is proud to introduce a new service that allows you to search and book a flight with Icelandair directly with Facebook Messenger. The new Icelandair Messenger Bot requires no additional downloads, plugins or extensions. Just open your Facebook Messenger, start a conversation, type in your information - such as your destination and travel dates - and book your flight. You can even include an Icelandair Stopover in Iceland for up to 7 nights, at no additional airfare, and soak yourself in a hot spring or trek through lava fields, not to mention the midnight sun or experiencing the northern lights, depending on the season.

How the Icelandair Messenger Bot works

What is a bot?
A ‘bot’, short for ‘robot’, is an autonomous program on a network specifically designed and programmed to interact with systems or users. The program remains on the network.
How do I start a conversation with the Icelandair Messenger Bot?
Open your Facebook Messenger, or create a new message on Facebook in your browser of choice. You can locate Icelandair by sending the message to @Icelandair, or going to our Facebook profile and hitting the ‘Message’ button in the lower right corner of our cover image. If you wish to book a flight, type ‘Book a flight’, or ‘Book a Stopover’ - if you wish to take a break from your transatlantic flight and spend up to seven nights in Iceland, at no additional airfare.
Can I book a flight to any destination with the bot?
You can only book flights to one of Icelandair’s 43 destinations in Europe and North America. The option of booking a connecting flight is currently not available.
What can I do if I need assistance from a customer service specialist, not the Icelandair Messenger Bot?
You can always ask for a human or type ‘help’. A customer service specialist will pick up your query and provide you with the information you need. When you are ready to resume your conversation with the bot, just start the booking process again by typing ‘Book a flight’ or ‘Book a Stopover’.
How quickly will an agent respond?
Normally, an agent will pick up the conversation and respond to your query within the hour. Currently, however, due to the overwhelming reaction to our new bot, it might take a little longer than usual.
Can I complete the entire booking process in Messenger?
You can search for a flight and start the booking process in a conversation. As soon as you begin providing us with more sensitive details about your flight, such as seat selection (when available) and payment information, you will be redirected to our website where you can finalize your booking. The transition, however, is seamless and you shouldn’t notice a thing.
Is the payment process safe?
When you reach the payment stage of your booking process, you will have been redirected to our website. At Icelandair, we take the security of our customers very seriously. We have taken all necessary security measures so that our customers can conduct their transactions with us in a secure way.

By using VeriSign® technology we can encrypt all data (beyond what is required by law). Since the introduction of our online business in 1997, we have only used credit/debit cards as the means of payment and have never experienced any credit card fraud. Using your credit/debit card on Icelandair's website is as safe as using it to pay in shops or restaurants.
Does the bot work in other languages?
No, for the time being the bot only responds to queries in English.
Can I ask the bot to change my flight?

No. For the time being the bot is only equipped to book a flight and answer questions. If you need to make changes to an existing booking, please ask for a customer service agent.
In which currencies can I see prices?
Currently, Icelandair´s Facebook Messenger Bot is only available in USD´s. We are working on making this service available in other currencies, please check back for updates.
