For those who do not know the story of the 13 Yule Lads, also known as the thirteen Santa Claus’s, now you can learn about these charming and mischievous characters while getting cool gifts from Icelandair!
Tradition is, beginning 13 days before Christmas Icelandic children place shoes in their window for each Yule Lad to leave a small gift. For children who have been good they may receive a piece of fruit or a small toy, bad children get potatoes. Below is the list of each day and the Yule Lad we can expect with their Icelandic name and English translation.
December 12 - Stekkjastaur – Gimpy
December 13 - Giljagaur – Gilly Oaf
December 14 - Stúfur – Itty Bitty
December 15 - Þvörusleikir – Pot Scraper Licker
December 16 - Pottasleikir – Pot Licker
December 17 - Askasleikir – Bowl Licker
December 18 - Hurðaskellir – Door Slammer
December 19 - Skyrgámur – Skyr Glutton
December 20 - Bjúgnakrækir – Sausage-pilfer
December 21 - Gluggagægir – Peeper
December 22 - Gáttaþefur – Sniffer
December 23 - Ketkrókur – Meat Hook
December 24 - Kertasníkir – Candle Beggar
To celebrate this tradition, every day starting December 12, one of the 13 Yule Lads will make an appearance and be offering a gift to one Lucky Icelandair winner. The grand prize will be a trip for two to Iceland including airfare, hotel at the Hotel Loftleidir and a Golden Circle Tour.
Other prizes include a traditional Icelandic sweater courtesy of Farmer's Market, products from the Blue Lagoon, an Icelandair sweatshirt and other cool and collectible Icelandair merchandise.
