Day 2 - Arrival in Iceland - overnight in Reykjavik
Early morning arrival in Iceland. Use the Flybus airport transfer voucher from your Booking Confirmation to transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik. Please note that breakfast is not included on your arrival day, and early check-in is not guaranteed. If your room is not ready at the time of your arrival, you can store your luggage at the hotel check-in desk until such time. The remainder of your day is open for your own activities. For a very Icelandic way to shake off the jetlag, we suggest a visit to one of the local geothermal pools! You might also explore Old Town Reykjavik, a prime location for charming buildings, cafes and museums; or a walk to the nearby Pearl attraction for a great view of the city.
Day 3 - Journey to the southernmost Tip - overnight in Vik
Enjoy morning breakfast at the hotel, followed by your tour pick-up which begins between 8:30am and 9am. Your tour guide will come into the hotel with a sign saying "Iceland Complete" in addition to the motorcoach outside which will have a sign in the window stating “Iceland Complete Tour”. The tour begins by heading over the Hellisheidi Plateau to the village of Hveragerdi, the gateway to the Golden Circle Region. Take unforgettable photos at the majestic Golden Falls and Great Geysir, Iceland's "Old Faithful." Continue along the south shore, stopping to visit Seljalandsfoss, and Skogafoss waterfall at the magnificent Skogarfoss Falls. If you are in the area from late June, perhaps bring your binoculars to view the legendary treasure of seabirds in the Dyrholaey area, including the popular puffins which are usually found nesting in the cliffs and crevices. Please note that Dyrholaey is closed during nesting season from the middle of May until June 23rd. Other bird watching opportunities are available on all tour dates. Total distance covered approximately 208 miles (335 km). (B,D)
Day 4 - Black Sand and Glacial Lagoon - overnight in the Hofn area
After breakfast you'll start your day by seeing Cross Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face of the earth, followed by a visit to the small town Kirkjubaejarklaustur, the former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent. The tour continues over the black sands of Skeidararsandur to Skaftafell National Park, then to the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon to marvel at the lake's collection of gorgeously-colored icebergs newly formed off the nearby Vatnajokull glacier. You can even opt to take a boat tour through the lagoon (not included in tour; booked in Iceland)! Throughout the day you also will see magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajokull, one of the largest glaciers in Europe. The day's dinner and overnight stay will be in the Hofn area. Total distance covered approximately 190 miles (305 km). (B,D)
Day 5 - The Southeast - Ancient Iceland - overnight in Egilsstadir
Start your morning - after breakfast of course! - marveling at the magnificent rock formations of the nation's oldest region, Eastern Iceland, as you head up north. After heading over a mountain pass with spectacular views of Europe's largest glacier (weather permitting), the scenery changes to bare rock faces plunging into the sea of the East Fjords. Today you will also visit Petra’s Stone Collection, a unique display of minerals and stones from the area, which has some of the most varied types of rocks in Europe. Total distance covered approximately 193 miles (310 km). (B,D)
Day 6 - Highland Desert and Volcanoes - overnight in the Myvatn area
Before heading to the Lake Myvatn area, explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateau Modrudalsoraefi; Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall; and Namaskard pass with its boiling mud pools and vibrant colors. Next is the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, including the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudo craters at Skutustadir and Laxa salmon river. One of the Myvatn area's claims to fame is that it's home to more species of ducks than any other place on Earth, with very diverse birdlife in general (best seen in May and June). During your stay, you'll visit a natural history museum displaying the type of birds found in the area. You might opt to visit the Myvatn Nature Baths, a relaxing natural hot-spring lake and steam baths (not included in tour price; booked in Iceland). Total distance covered approximately 190 miles (305 km). (B,D)
Day 7 - Northern Brilliance - overnight in Akureyri
Following breakfast you'll head west, stopping en route to visit Laufas, a 19th century farmhouse and rectory preserved by the National Museum of Iceland, as well as Godafoss falls, nestled amid brilliant foliage and stern rock faces. Drive along the scenic gorge of a fjord to Akureyri. the capital of North Iceland, and home to some of the most beautiful wooden buildings in the country. Though small, Akureyri is quite active with museums, gardens and art galleries, and has become known as the capital of North Iceland because of its many services and excellent harbor. Dinner is on your own tonight, but with the several notable restaurants in Akureyri, you should enjoy deciding which one to try. Total distance covered approximately 106 miles (170 km). (B)
Day 8 - Mountains and Valleys - overnight in the Borgarnes area
The route to Skagafjordur finds its way through majestic mountains, narrow passes and an area famed for its fine Icelandic horses. Next, head towards the village of Blonduos, built on both sides of the salmon river Bland. This river is also home to Hrutey Island, a protected nature reserve.
